c The WNCC men saw Western Wyoming score two goals with under 13 minutes to play to only earn a tie with the Mustangs 2-2 after double overtime.
The WNCC men definitely missed out on a prime win.
The Cougars were dominating play for much of the match, enjoying a 2-0 lead. The Cougars scored first with 3:58 left in the first half. Gage Smith rocketed a shot that hit the goalpost and Omar Ceesay took the rebound and planted it into the net for the 1-0 lead after the first half.
WNCC grabbed a 2-0 lead with 31:21 to play as Owen Parra delivered a pass to Sergio Moreno who went horizontal and headed the ball into the net.
The Cougars were then just trying to hold on but the Mustangs had other ideas. Western Wyoming finally scored with 12:27 to play on a goal by Tanner Trumble. The Cougar defense was playing tough after that and it seemed as if WNCC would hold on. Western Wyoming had other ideas as Bristen Lowell scored the tying goal with 2:26 to play to force overtime.
Neither team scored in the two 10-minute overtime periods despite numerous attempts by both teams.
WNCC outshot Western Wyoming 24-11 and had seven corner kicks to zero for Western Wyoming. Bryant Velasquez had seven saves in net.
Alfredo Velasquez said while the team lost, they also played well.
"I thought we played pretty good," Velasquez said. "It was a chance to get all our players to play for next year. It really doesn't matter for conference. We wanted to win it, but we played good. We could have played a lot better. We just have to start finishing."
The way the Cougars played in the match does make the tie a little better except of the way they didn't finish.
"That [finishing] is something that we have had trouble with all season. It has gotten better, but we still need to work on it."
Velasquez said they have to learn from the loss as they get ready for NJC on Saturday at 2 p.m.
"That is something that we have to work for every game and get better," he said. "We just have to learn from this game for tomorrow and finish tomorrow. We need to have a short memory."
