PARIS, Texas – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team closed out their Texas swing with four losses on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday, the Cougars fell to Trinity Valley Community College by the scores of 15-0 and 26-0. Sunday, the Cougars played much better, especially in the first game as they were tied with the preseason 7th-ranked team Paris Junior College at 1-0 before dropping the front-end of the doubleheader 8-2. The second game saw Paris win 8-0.
The Cougars now get some home games with four straight dates beginning Saturday and Sunday when Dawson Community College comes to Cougar Palace followed by Luna Community College on March 7-8.
The first game Sunday against Paris was a decent contest against the preseason Top 10 ranked teams. Paris scored first with a run in the first, but the Cougars responded in the top of the second with a run.
The second started with Jasmine Castro and Viktoria Sarkanyova getting singles. Alyssa Albaugh followed with a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Castro stole home for the first run to tie the game.
WNCC held Paris scoreless in the second and third inning. It was the fourth that saw Paris score three times and then added four in the fourth for an 8-1 lead. WNCC added a run in the sixth when Abbey Arntsen singled and then Castro reached on an error. Arnsten then scored on a 2-out single by Albaugh.
WNCC had five hits, all singles in the contest and the team only struck out three times in the game.
The second game saw the Cougars offense shut down with just a handful of runners. WNCC started a fifth-inning rally when Albaugh got the first hit of the game followed by Kenzie George drawing a walk.
The games on Saturday against Trinity Valley, the Cougars just couldn't stop Trinity Valley's offense. For the Cougars, game one saw the Cougars get five hits, all singles.
The second game saw WNCC allow just two first-inning runs and then the second and third innings went the wrong way. WNCC had three hits in the contest, all singles, led by Tori Travers two singles.
