The Western Nebraska Community College women's soccer team dropped a Region IX conference contest to Laramie County Community College on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles, who received votes in last week's NJCAA national poll, earned the 7-0 win to move to 6-0-1 in the conference and 6-2-2 overall. WNCC drops to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
WNCC will have three matches next week beginning with a match with Barton Community College on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Landers Soccer Complex. WNCC will then have two matches over the weekend when Central Wyoming College and Northwest College come to Scottsbluff. Barton is 5-4 overall and the one common opponent saw Barton defeat Lamar 5-1 while WNCC topped Lamar 4-3.
On Saturday against LCCC, the Golden Eagles took control of the match early as Avery Anderson scored just three minutes into the game. After that, the Cougars held the nationally-ranked team in check, playing even with them.
It was in the 36th minute that LCCC went up 2-0 on a Emily Sheather goal and the Golden Eagles led 3-0 at halftime as Ekena Little scored in the 43rd minute.
The second half saw LCCC score four more goals, the first coming just a minute into the half when Sheather scored her second goal. LCCC would add three more goals after that for the win.
WNCC managed just one shot on goal in the match and that came from Julia Santos.
WNCC's goalkeepers Rory Weizenegger and Feline Groenwold each spent a half in net. Weizenegger had five saves and Groenwold had three saves.
