GILLETTE, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men's soccer team opened up the conference portion of their schedule with a 2-1 road win over Gillette College in Gillette, Wyoming.
The win was the Cougars first win of the year and it came during the important part of the season – the conference matches.
The game was a battle in the first half with neither team scoring.
All the scoring came in the second half and it was the Pronghorns that scored first as George Foster scored in the 64th minute.
WNCC wasted little time in tying the contest. Alvaro Abeal took a free kick from 25-yard out and put it in the back of the net to make it 1-1.
In the 78th minute, WNCC took the lead as Jean Wil Standley-Lor took the corner kick and fed Giani Nguili with the ball to score the go-ahead goal.
WNCC finished the contest with 16 shots, eight of which were on goal while Gillette had 11 shots, six of which were on goal.
Ever Zubia had seven saves in goal for the Cougars.
WNCC will look for win number two in the conference on Saturday when they travel to face Casper College at Casper's Kelly Walsh High School beginning at 3 p.m.
