WNCC volleyball team falls twice on Saturday

                COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team dropped two more matches on Saturday to finish the Reiver Invite in Council Bluffs, Iowa with an 0-4 record.

                Saturday's action saw the Cougars falls to Salt Lake Community College 25-10, 25-21, 25-14 and then finished up the invite with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 loss to Hutchinson Community College.

                Against Hutchinson, the Cougars battled in each set gave up some 3- and 4-point services runs to fall. The third set against Hutchinson, the Cougars had a 14-13 lead after two points from Allie Twamley and led 18-17 on a kill from Maria Niedzwiecka. That was when Hutchinson went two 3-point service runs to take the 25-20 win and match.

                Twamley had 12 set assists, eight digs, and five service points in the loss. Alex Gonzales-Orozco tallied 17 digs and four points, while Kyana Gabriel had seven kills, 14 digs, and four points.

                Dani Cruz led the team with eight kills while also tallying 12 digs and three points.

                In the Salt Lake contest, the Cougars best set was the second, but once again, they couldn't get the set falling 25-21.

                WNCC tallied just 14 kills in the set with Emma Hergenreder leading the way with six followed by Eli Braitwaite with three. WNCC hit -.138 for the match.

                Hergenreder also had five digs. Gonzalez-Orozco led the way with nine digs while Anika Davison had five and Cruz had four.

                WNCC will be back on the road this weekend when they compete in a tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will face four teams from Florida in Hillsborough Community College and Eastern Florida State College on Friday and then two ranked team on Saturday in No. 1 Florida Southwestern State College and No. 15 Daytona State College.

                Daytona State is 1-3 on the season while Florida Southwestern is 4-0. Eastern Florida State is 3-1 while Hillsborough is 1-3.
